Course Objectives

Training IED experts as IED forensic experts:

  • capability to analyze the explosion scene
  • capability to reconstruct the explosion
  • capability to stand in court as an IED expert.

Course Overview

This course provides a comprehensive understanding of explosion scene investigation, combining theoretical knowledge and practical skills. It begins with an introduction to fundamental concepts, such as shock waves, blast waves, and the chemistry of explosives, including their types and effects. Participants will explore systematic methodologies for working in explosion scenes, focusing on casualty management, evidence collection, documentation, and maintaining the integrity of exhibits.

Course Outline

Module 1:
  • Reviewing basic terms such as “shock wave”, blast wave. Types of explosives etc.
  • Explosives categories: Improvised, standard, categorize by appearance
  • Explosives “families”: per oxides, chlorates etc.
  • Chemistry of explosives: understanding the molecule, compound, mixture, chemical reaction, burning, sensitivity
  • Effects in an explosion scene: suction, crushing, repulsion
Module 2:
  • Methodology of work in an explosion scene: Casualties, area (open/closed), collection of findings, marking, scanning methodology, signs at the scene, recording, photographing, drawing, reporting.
  • Collection of remains (exhibits):
    Registering in the field, marking, registration, collection + marking of the sample to maintain a chain of exhibits, transfer to specific laboratories + registration support (maintaining a chain of exhibits).
Module 3:
  • Photography and Documentation of the arena
  • Marking and photographing exhibits (stills/video), recording and preparing a list of exhibits.
Module 4:
  • Prepare an Expert report:
    Legal report, professional background of the writer, professional experience, description: what happened and where, description of exhibits, tests if performed, professional opinion of the expert.
Module 5:
  • Tools and equipment:
    Personal protection, gloves, collection bags, test tubes, recording cameras, measuring tools, drawing and writing tools, magnets, lighting kit, explosives identification kit, sniffer, reflecting device, microscope, compute. Explosive residue, toxic, physical injury, gases, infectious diseases.
  • Safety instructions:
    Explosive residue, toxic, physical injury, gases, infectious diseases.
  • Field Exercises:
    Our training will place great emphasis on conducting field exercises – at least 6 exercises will be conducted in the field.
